After surgery, it is often difficult to regain the flexibility and strength to return to normal activity. Many procedures require several weeks to several months of follow-up care after the surgery to ensure that everything progresses as expected. Whether you have had your surgery locally or in another hospital, Meeker Memorial Hospital’s Rehabilitation Department can assist you in achieving your goals for a better, more productive life. We work in conjunction with your surgeon, following guidelines, protocols and our clinical expertise to provide you with the most up-to-date and evidence based treatment to bring you the best possible outcome. We believe that maintain open communication with your doctor throughout the recovery phase following your surgery is essential to assure that your team is on the same page and working together towards your goals.
Every patient responds differently to surgical procedures and it is impossible to predict how you might do. We are here to help you through. Our initial focus is on pain/edema control and helping you get through the acute phase of surgery. Often, this requires protection and immobilization of the surgical site, education about what to expect and moral support.
As you progress in your recovery and move into later phases of healing, we gradually move into techniques and exercises to improve range of motion, muscle activation, strength and eventually, functional training. We believe that ongoing education about your condition is very important for you to understand what you should and should not do to optimize the healing process.
A large component of your recovery lies in your understanding of the education you are receiving from your therapist(s) as well as your compliance in the program you are prescribed to perform at home.
