Our joints can wear out. However, worn out joints can be replaced somewhat routinely by skilled orthopedic surgeons. Knee and hip replacements are the most common.
At Meeker Memorial Hospital, rehabilitation professionals are here to help you through the replacement process. Patients are seen before surgery to get baseline measurements and to answer questions about the procedure. Patients are seen shortly after surgery to begin mobilization. Both occupational therapists and physical therapists work together to progress the patient towards being able to return to their homes.
If surgery is done elsewhere, outpatient therapy services usually begins after discharge from that hospital. Therapists work with the patients on various goals; these include pain and swelling control, improving range of motion, walking with and eventually without assistive devices, strengthening, balance and return to normal activities. Patients are given exercise assignments to work on at home, and they are educated on how to manage their own care. Therapy often continues several weeks after hospital discharge until the patient is independent.
